Environmental Landscape Certification Program

The Environmental Landscape
Certification (ELC) program was developed for SCLTA by
Clemson University through a grant from the SC Forestry
Commission. This certification is intended to serve
SCLTA membership and others by increasing professional
knowledge and competence.
Why become certified?
To
demonstrate commitment to responsible environmental
stewardship
To create
an opportunity for continued self learning
To raise
the standard of performance for the green industry
Target audience includes but is not
limited to:
Landscape
installation and maintenance contractors
Municipal,
commercial and private grounds workers
Property
and estate managers
Landscape
designers / Public tree managers
Obtaining Environmental
Landscape Certification
Certification is awarded by SCLTA
to individuals who:
* Possess
a current Category III Ornamentals and Turf pesticide
applicators license.
*
Successfully pass a written test based on required
reading presented in the ELC study manual and a plant
identification test.
The study manual contains seven
chapters (Landscape Design, New Tree Establishment,
Established Tree Maintenance, Turfgrass, Business
Practices, Pest Management, and Planting and Pruning
Techniques) and a Plant Identification section on CD.

The exam format includes multiple choice and true/false
questions

There are a total of 157 questions on the exam (82 on
manual and 75 on plant id.)
Testing occurs during the months of
January and October each year and will be administered
by SCLTA. Test scores will be sent in writing within 30
calendar days of the exam date. Certification will be
awarded and all records will be managed by SCLTA.
Individuals who obtain
certification will receive the following:
* A
signed certificate suitable for framing
* Name
listed on SCLTA website under ELC Professionals
* Use of
the ELC logo window sticker identifying the certified
individual
* Option
to purchase additional promotional items (caps, signs,
etc.)
Maintaining Environmental
Landscape Certification
Ten hours of authorized
environmental landscape education activities are
required per individual over a three-year period to
maintain certification status. The continuing education
credit (CEC) requirement will be due in the month of
January at the end of the three-year cycle. One
educational contact hour equals one continuing education
credit.

- SC Nursery & Landscape
Association’s Annual Conference (February)
- SCNLA / SCLTA Fall Field Day
(October)
- Other programs as approved
Ordering the Environmental
Landscape Certification Study Manual
To order
the ELC Study Manual and Plant Identification CD, please
complete the following form and send a $75.00 check or
money order payable to SCLTA.
Registering for the
Environmental Landscape Certification Exam
The exam is held annually
in January one day prior to
the SCLTA Annual Conference and/or in October one day
prior to the SCNLA / SCLTA Fall Field Day. The next
scheduled exams will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2007
from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Clemson University
Sandhill Research & Education Center located at 900
Clemson Road in Columbia, SC and on January 22, 2008 at
the Jamil Shrine Temple located at 206 Jamil Road in
Columbia, SC.
Passing
grades must be received in both test areas (manual and
plant identification) and a copy of a valid Pesticide
Certification Category III license must be sent to SCLTA
before Environmental Landscape Certification will be
granted. Individual tests may be taken or retaken yearly
as needed, until passing grades are received. First-time
participants may retake the exam within a 12 month
period at no charge.

Pesticide Certification
Testing
and licensing of the SC Pesticide Certification is
administered by the Dept. of Pesticide Regulation,
not SCLTA. For study and testing information contact
the Dept. of Pesticide Regulation at
